Take the picturesque inland alternative to the Great Ocean Road and follow the Princes Highway to Camperdown, one of the major towns in the Shipwreck Coast hinterland.

Thanks to the temperate climate that stimulates lush natural pasture growth, Camperdown is one of Australia’s most prestigious dairying regions and the surrounding lakes are known as great places to fish for trout and chinook salmon.

Camperdown rests at the foot of Mount Leura, a volcanic cone (and excellent lookout) that lies between the coastal ranges and the rolling western plains. Volcanic activity has shaped much of the surrounding landscape, leaving a legacy of cones, lakes and craters and it is now one of the world’s largest volcanic plains. Mt Leura and Mt Sugarloaf are the highest points and display the volcanic terrain with 360-degree views.
